KarnalaFort.
A monsoon fortress, a basalt pinnacle, a bird sanctuary. Come walk it with me.
Five kilometres through dense sanctuary forest to one of the Sahyadris' most striking landmarks — the 125-foot basalt pinnacle of Pandu's Tower. Past the Bhavani Temple and the old fortifications, ending back at Panvel station. Beginner-friendly, history-rich, spectacular in the monsoon.

From Panvel station through sanctuary forest to a basalt pinnacle.
The trail enters the Karnala Bird Sanctuary and climbs steadily through dense forest. Past the Bhavani Temple halfway up, stone steps lead through the ancient fort walls to the base of Pandu's Tower — the 125-foot basalt pinnacle that has watched over the Bor Pass trade route for centuries.
How the day actually unfolds.
All starting from Panvel station. The sanctuary trail is gentle to begin — then those ancient stone steps arrive. We return the same way.
Meet at Panvel Station
Gather at the main exit of Panvel station. Quick headcount, introductions, and we flag a shared auto/rickshaw to the sanctuary entrance — about 10 minutes away.
Karnala Bird Sanctuary — Entry
Pay the small entry fee, pick up the forest trail. The canopy is thick here — over 150 resident and migratory bird species call this 12 sq km sanctuary home. We walk slowly in the forest section; the birding is worth it.
Bhavani Temple — Halfway Rest
An ancient temple dedicated to Goddess Bhavani, nestled among the lower fort fortifications. We stop here — water, snacks, and a look around the stone ruins before the real climb begins. The fort walls visible from here are over 350 years old.
Fort Steps — The Steep Bit
The ancient rock-cut stairway through the fort gate. Steep, uneven, spectacular. The original studded wooden doors still stand. This is where Karnala earns its reputation — short but serious.
Pandu's Tower — Summit
The 125-foot basalt pinnacle. You can't summit it without technical gear, but reaching its base is reward enough — 360° views of the Sahyadri range, ancient rock-cut cisterns, and the silence of the upper fort. We stay as long as the group wants.
Descent — Back to Panvel
Same route back down. The descent goes faster. At the sanctuary gate we grab chai from the small stalls, then auto/rickshaw back to Panvel station. Everyone catches their own train home.
Bring exactly this. No more, no less.
Karnala is short but the June humidity will test you. Light pack, good shoes, enough water. The fort steps are uneven — footwear matters here.
